Whether you’re cutting carbs or going gluten free there’s no reason you should have to give up on your favorite meals. Sandwiches, pizza, cookies, brownies, and muffins can all be made with alternatives to bread and flour without giving up on taste or texture. After all, how long is your diet really going to last if you don’t like the foods you’re eating?
Here are just a few alternatives and substitutions for bread and flour.
Sandwiches — Take your favorite sandwich fillings and get creative with what to put them in. Hollowed out cucumbers are perfect for tuna salad. Make lettuce wraps with grilled chicken and chic peas. The same goes for tacos. There’s no need to use shells or flour tortillas when you’ve got leafy greens to fill. Mushrooms are another great replacement. Make a spinach, tomato, and egg scramble and put it between two grilled portobello mushrooms.
Pizza — This is one of the toughest things to give up when starting a new diet. So don’t! You can replace pizza dough completely by using large portobello mushrooms with toppings. Or, if you’re not ready to give up on dough completely, simply make a crust out of carrot or cauliflower. Most recipes only call for about a teaspoon of coconut or almond flour!
Baked goods — If you’ve got a sweet tooth, giving up on desserts can test your will power. The good news is that there are several low carb, non-wheat flour options to choose from. Coconut flour is a low carb, high fiber alternative that can be used in nearly any recipe. If the flavor of coconut isn’t something you care for, almond flour is also a low carb replacement and lends itself well to baking. One final substitution isn’t a flour at all. Ground up chai seeds are great for giving your baked goods the texture you want while also making them rich in Omega 3’s.
So if you’re thinking of starting a low or no carb diet or if you’re looking for fresh ways to spice up your already bread free diet, try some of these deliciously creative alternatives.
