Health Benefits of Donating Blood

According to the American Red Cross, “Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood,” and, “[m]ore than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day.” We all know that by donating blood we are helping to save lives all over the United States. But did you know that there are personal health benefits to donating blood as well? So if you’re on the fence about donating blood here are just a few things to consider.

  1. Donate blood - the health benefits of donating blood.Heart Disease Risk Reduction — Some doctors and scientists believe that donating blood reduces an individual’s risk for heart disease. While more studies need to be done, initial statistics show that those who donate blood regularly are less at risk for heart disease than those who don’t donate. Speculation points towards regular blood donation as a healthy way to keep the blood’s iron at healthy levels.
  2. Free Health Exam — Each person who gives blood is given an abbreviated physical exam to ensure they are healthy enough to give blood. This includes measuring blood pressure, temperature, and pulse. In addition, once the blood is taken, its iron levels are tested as well as a number of other factors to ensure that the blood is safe for use.
  3. Red Cell Production Increase — After an individual donates blood the red cells that have been taken need to be replaced. Our bodies sense this immediately and kick into red blood cell production overdrive in order to replenish the body’s supply.

Of course good karma is always a good reason to do anything, especially donating blood. By donating regularly you could be helping individuals with anemia, cancer, or even critical patients like car crash victims. Talk to your doctor and see if you are eligible to donate blood.
