Joint inflammation is a common and painful occurrence. Whether you’re an athlete with overworked joints or an individual who suffers from chronic joint pain caused by arthritis or an autoimmune disease, the pain and decreased mobility associated with inflammation can decrease your quality of life. Of course there are common therapies, treatments and medications available to help decrease the swelling of joints as well as help with the side effects associated with them. Less commonly known, however, is that diet can play a large role in combatting this disorder.
While you should always consult with your healthcare professional before making any major dietary changes, here is a list of natural foods that can help fight inflammation when incorporated into a healthy, balanced diet.
- Fish Oil – Fish that have a higher fat content like salmon, tuna and sardines are contain oils that are rich in fatty acids that have been proven to reduce inflammation. By eating these types of fish several times a week your body will begin to benefit from these natural fatty acids. Taking a Fish Oil supplement is a good way to take advantage of these benefits as well, especially if you don’t care for fish.
- Colorful Vegetables – Veggies like peppers, tomatoes, squash and leafy greens all have high levels of antioxidants and low levels of starch. Both of which are key in promoting joint health.
- Berries – Much like colorful vegetables, berries are high in antioxidants. They are also low in fat and help to keep the body hydrated and energized.
- Avocado – This fatty fruit – yes fruit – can help to decrease blood vessel inflammation. So eating things like guacamole that are chock full garlic and onion (also inflammation fighters) is a great way to improve joint health.
