Stress, anxiety, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise can all contribute mild to severe insomnia. Luckily there are several steps that can be taken that can help you to fall asleep faster and STAY asleep once you do without having to use a sleep aid.
Here are a few ways to fight insomnia naturally:
- Schedule Sleep – As difficult as it may seem it’s important to maintain a regular sleep schedule. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day helps train your mind and body to the routine.
- Build a Pre-Sleep Ritual — take 30 minutes to an hour before your scheduled sleep time to do something relaxing that you enjoy. Drink a cup of tea and read a book. Listen to calming music. Anything that puts your mind at ease will help to quiet those noisy thoughts that keep you up at night.
- Aromatherapy — Work aromatherapy into your pre-sleep ritual. Scents like lavender, sandalwood, chamomile, and rose have been shown to have a calming effects. Burn a scented candle, aromatic oils or incense during your pre-sleep ritual to add an extra calming element.
- Exercise Regularly — This is especially helpful to those who have a desk job that has them fairly sedentary on a regular basis. We may be mentally tired at the end of the day but if our bodies aren’t physically tired it can lead to trouble falling asleep. The key is to feel relaxed and tired — mind, body and spirit.
