With the growing number of detoxification plans, diets and regimens being made available at the click of a mouse, the staff at Health Through Awareness wanted to take some time to ensure that our readers are choosing safe and healthy methods in detoxification. Detoxing, like any other controlled change to your body’s routine should be a well educated decision that is done with proper precautions with your physical and mental health in mind.
There are safe ways to detox and there are dangerous ways to detox. Here are a few detox “Do’s and Don’ts”
Do — Ensure you are consuming enough calories each day. “Enough” calories depends on your physical build and activity level. Talk with your nutritionist or health care practitioner to discuss your ideal, daily calorie goals.
Don’t — Eat too few calories. With popular cleanses that only allow the consumption of juices you run the risk of not reaching your ideal calorie intake and in turn you risk malnourishment. As a result you may suffer from fatigue, light headedness and headaches. You may also stop losing weight because your body switches over into “maintain” mode when it’s not being properly nourished.
Do — Drink plenty of water! Talk to your health care professional about how much water you should be drinking daily. People sometimes get so wrapped up in sweating out the toxins in their bodies that they’ll forget to replenish what’s been lost.
Don’t — Overdo it with sweat inducing exercise. This can also lead to fatigue, headaches and dehydration. All of which are counterproductive to detoxing in the first place. Detoxification methods like FAR-infrared radiant heat offered by Health Through Awareness are set in a safe and controlled environment and can also help with blood circulation and stress reduction.
Do — Consider any health issues you may have before partaking in any major detox diet. Your healthcare professional can discuss the risks and rewards of a detoxification regimen based on you overall physical and mental health.
Don’t — Simply choose a detoxification diet without doing your research first. There may be severe health implications associated with certain plans. Simply choosing what may be popular at the time may not be what’s best for you and your body.
