In general, as a culture we are always looking for lifestyle changes we can make to improve our overall health. We join gyms, take yoga classes, eat clean, and meditate. However, we tend to overlook the little things that have an impact on our health and it’s the little things that can have the greatest health implications. There are several things that many of us do on a daily basis without giving a second thought as to what it could be doing to our overall health.
In that vein, here are a few bad habits to avoid in order to treat your body right!
- Contacts — Never sleep in your contacts. Extended wear can cause everything from irritation and pinkeye, to headaches and major eye damage.
- Dental Care — Keeping healthy teeth and gums by brushing and flossing every day and by seeing your dentist for regular cleanings, has a larger impact on your wellbeing than you may realize. Poor dental health has an effect on our overall health and has even been linked specifically to heart disease.
- Makeup — Skin is our largest organ and by taking care of it, we’re improving our overall health. There are lots of mistakes that we make when it comes to makeup. Here are the big ones to avoid in order to keep your skin healthy and looking younger.
- Never borrow makeup. This could lead to skin rash or eye infection for both you and the makeup’s owner.
- Don’t sleep in your makeup. Not removing your makeup before bed can lead to clogged pores, skin irritation, and premature aging of the skin.
- Buy organic when possible. All natural makeups don’t contain chemicals or toxins that can damage your skin.
- Sitting — Remaining sedentary at work and sitting for long periods of time can affect metabolism, cholesterol levels, weight control, and can even cause poor digestion and hemorrhoids. Find excuses to get up and walk around. Go to the printer, walk to the farthest water cooler, do a lap around the office to say hello to co-workers, and never eat lunch at your desk!
- Hydration — During a work day we drink coffee and tea to make it through the day, but we forget to drink enough water. Replacing some of that caffeine with water helps your body to naturally detoxify and can actually provide you with the energy you need.
Many times we find that less is more. These small changes to your daily routine are no exception.
