Some Limitations of Physical Examinations

Physical examinations are a necessary part of determining the severity of an injury, diagnosing a health issue and for tracking progress and recovery. However, equally important is the patient’s history as explained by Dr. Philip Getson, founder of TDI – Thermographic Diagnostic Imaging here:

Physical examinations can sometimes have a tendency of feeling cold and impersonal. Your doctor may poke your in a few places, ask you some general questions about symptoms and then recommend a course of action. Whether that means surgery to remove a cyst, a cast to heal a broken bone or a medication to help manage pain these determinations are often reached within the span of a 15-20 minute physical examination and only acknowledge the one injury at hand.

Physical examinations are sufficient in treating the obvious issues that have manifested in the patient. However, a physical examination does not address any underlying issues that may have been caused by the initial trauma. The approach taken at Dr. Getson’s office, TDI – Thermographic Diagnostic Imaging of New Jersey, is to spend more time speaking with each patient to truly understand his or her history. Dr. Getson takes the time to find out from each patient HOW their injury happened rather than simply focusing on the outcome and symptoms of the injury. This helps in determining whether or not the patient is at risk for any other injuries or health issues as a result.
