Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a neurological disorder caused by the malfunctioning of the autonomic nervous system. The cause is usually a traumatic injury. However, in most cases, the intense burning pain seems to be more severe and out of proportion to the nature of the injury. Many people with this syndrome also experience muscle spasms, increased sensitivity to light and sound and digestive and bladder issues. It is estimated that up to 5 million Americans have been diagnosed with this painful disorder. However, some believe that there are still many more that go undiagnosed.
Because RSD/CRPS are not very well known or publicized many cases go undiagnosed because individuals simply assume the pain is related to some other physical or physiological condition. In addition, the most commonly used methods of screening for this disorder like x-ray, CAT scan and MRI only serve to eliminate other problems.
Dr. Philip Getson of Thermographic Diagnostic Imaging has found that the best tool for the diagnosis of RSD/CRPS is thermography. This type of infrared imaging allows for the doctor to see the sympathetic dysfunction within the images taken and identify the disorder. This test is also ideal for this painful disorder because it requires no physical contact and is completely pain free.
If you believe you have suffered a traumatic injury and experience undiagnosed pain as a result, it may be time to speak with your health care professional about having a thermographic examination.
