What Is Thermography?
Every square inch of your skin radiates infrared energy, and the pattern of that radiation is shaped by what happens underneath: circulation, autonomic nerve activity, inflammation-related warmth, the everyday physiology of your tissues. Medical thermography – digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) – uses an ultra-sensitive infrared camera to record that pattern in fine detail, without touching you and without ionizing radiation.

The result is something none of the familiar tests produce: a physiological map of the body. X-ray, mammography, ultrasound, CT, and MRI show structure – what tissues look like. A thermogram shows function – how warm they run and how that warmth is distributed. Because the two kinds of imaging answer different questions, thermography works as an adjunct to structural tests and clinical evaluation rather than a substitute for them. A heat pattern alone doesn’t diagnose anything; its value is what it adds to the picture your healthcare provider is assembling.
What a Thermogram Involves
You stand or sit in front of the camera in a temperature-controlled room while a trained technician captures a series of standardized images. Depending on the study, a cold challenge may be included in the protocol. The appointment is quiet, private, and unhurried – most patients tell us it is the easiest imaging they have ever done.
What Makes TDI Different
Thermography is only as good as its technique. Room temperature, patient acclimation, camera stability, view angles, and interpretation standards all determine whether a study is reproducible – and reproducibility is what makes baseline comparison meaningful. TDI has refined its protocols since 1982: standardized image capture, controlled conditions, board-certified technicians, and interpretation of every study by a Board-Certified Clinical Thermologist.
Physicians, dentists, and other practitioners refer patients to TDI when they want physiological information to consider alongside examination, history, and testing. Patients come on their own when they want a baseline of their body’s thermal patterns – and a practice that treats that information carefully.
