Estrogen dominance is a little known syndrome with the potential for big health risks. These risks include, but are not limited to, weight gain, depression, migraines, ovarian cysts, fibrocystic breast disease, and breast cancer. Since estrogen dominance is most common in menopausal and pre menopausal women, these health problems are often brushed off as natural symptoms of getting older and going through menopause.
Estrogen dominance happens when the body’s level of progesterone falls allowing estrogen to become the more prevalent hormone. In addition to keeping the effects of estrogen in check, progesterone is responsible for a great number of functions within the body. These include, keeping blood sugar balanced, helping thyroid gland function, and inhibiting the overgrowth of breast tissue. If left unopposed, heightened estrogen levels can lead to any or all of the aforementioned health problems.
The important thing to remember is that if you are experiencing any or all of these symptoms it is important to talk with your doctor to understand the risks associated with estrogen dominance. He or she can discuss your personal risk for estrogen dominance and breast cancer. Your doctor may recommend a chance in diet, vitamin supplementation, and/or hormone replacement in order to get your hormone levels back in balance. He or she may also recommend breast screening methods like thermography to assess your breast health and your risk for cancer.
